This is a very long Exposure taken at Driftwood Beach on Jeckyl Island. The surreal appearance is from the long exposure. The tree is submerged in water due to high tide. I have other images of this tree from lower tides where the water does not even reach the tree.
Jeckyl Island is a barrier island found off the southern end of Georgia. It is a short distance from St. Simons Island. Jeckyl boasts driftwood beach which is a beach that has eroded further and further inland and as the salt water has encroached on the trees it has killed them. The result is a large number of dead trees that line the shores either still standing or that have fallen over.
The trees make fabulous photographic subject matter as can be seen here, and face either the rising sun on the north end of the island or the setting sun on the south end.
