Description
Jeckyl Island is a barrier island found off the southern end of Georgia. It is a short distance from St. Simons Island. Jeckyl boasts driftwood beach which is a beach that has eroded further and further inland and as the salt water has encroached on the trees it has killed them. The result is a large number of dead trees that line the shores either still standing or that have fallen over.
The trees make fabulous photographic subject matter as can be seen here, and face either the rising sun on the north end of the island or the setting sun on the south end. If you are visiting for the purpose of taking photos high and low tides make big differences in what your shot will look like. The tides can be found online as can sunrise or sunset times for the days you plan to visit. If you can catch sunrise or sunset about midway from low to high tide you may like those results best. Also make sure you show up well before sunrise or sunset to get the best angle since space is limited due to other fallen trees blocking many angles and other photographers planting themselves in the primo spot early on.
If this image interests you please check out my Savannah Jeckyl Island Collection for a wide variety of images centering around this type of subject matter including sunset, sunrise, multiple trees, color, high tide, low tide, and black and white versions.
